Greetings From Lake Cuyamaca

The lake is open for fishing every day at 6:00 AM.
Shore fishing ends at sunset.

The Lake Cuyamaca Restaurant and grocery store open at 6 AM,
serving American and Austrian cuisine, with daily specials.

Well... "Wet-Sox" and I were just talking about the "Junior Waterfowl Hunt" going on out here at the Lake. We're standing in about 2 feet of water because... well, that's when "Wet Sox" usually thinks at his best. I guess you would call it a "Wet Sox" epiphany. Rangers Jay Blaylock and Charlie Taylor organized the Hunt and have taken care of all Waterfowl Hunts during the season. These rangers are brothers (in law) but don't act like it... they never fight with each other!

Most of the prizes and food was purchased with the monies collected from the regular season waterfowl hunting here at the Lake, so a big thanks goes out to the regulars... some of their hunting fees went to a great cause... The day started out early with the hunters, their parents, and their sponsors showing up at about 4:30 a.m. ... that's before the sparrow farts. First order of the day was coffee, orange juice, apple juice, and (of course) dough-nuts. After that, all participants were given a "Waterfowl Meal Ticket" for later... They could go to the Cuyamaca Restaurant and order from a list of either breakfast or lunch items... on the house. All of the Junior Hunters received a gift bag with stuff like safety glasses, a "Ducks Unlimited" T-shirt, ear protection, and duck calls. The parents and sponsors received complimentary "Azteca" drinking glasses with the Lake Cuyamaca logo etched on them. Then, a hat was passed around to pick a blind... and with each blind came another prize. Everything from an open faced "ugly stick" fishing combo to an air rifle with a scope, hydration pack, or universal tool, etc. Jay did the shopping and came back with some great stuff for the young Hunters. We certainly thank the "California Waterfowl Association" for advertising our hunt on their website and carrying us as additional insured under their umbrella policy at no cost to the Lake. Also a big thanks to Rick Lewis from the San Diego Chapter of "Duck's Unlimited" for his contribution of the T-Shirts and Golf-Shirts. We met Rick earlier in the year and he has proven to be a good supporter of our efforts. He has participated in the Junior Waterfowl Hunt, The Wounded Warriors Hunt, a special "Duck's Unlimited" hunt, and has visited the Lake to donate camo-netting for our blinds. Rick has also given good insight to us and does what he says. The name of the game, with a few exceptions, is to get rid of the parents and send the Junior Waterfowl Hunters out with a sponsor... someone new, who can work with them on technique, rules, and regulation, etc. Bobby Jarrell and his son Blake were first to arrive. Bobby works for S.D.G.&E. in the area and this was a special day for him and Blake together. Blake won the "ugly stick" fishing combo. Cody Cornette was the sponsor for Thomas Carpenter. Thomas dropped 2- pin-tail ducks in one shot. By the way, that was Thomas's first kill(s). The birds were flying next to each other and the rest is history. Jene Callaway sponsored Jacob Sheppard. Jacob was able to use a modified 12 ga. shotgun that Jene provided for him. Cody Cornette's dad, Chris sponsored Emory Allen-Fox. Emory's ears must have been bleeding after spending 4 hours in a blind with Chris Cornette. Richard "Jay" Blaylock sponsored Kenneth Hall... "Jay" is a ranger here at the Lake. Jamie Lynn sponsored Buster Hoy again this year, and Luke Brehm shared a blind with Christian Fulcher. All blinds were full, and everyone had a great time during the shoot. Afterwards, we went up to the restaurant for breakfast/lunch... Have you ever heard of a female waitress named Barney? Well, there is one here at Lake Cuyamaca. Barney, Amy, and the cook, Roxanne, took care of the hearty appetites... Lake Cuyamaca restaurant brings a new meaning to the term "carbo-load"... by 11:30 a.m. it was time to say "Via Con Dios"... some memories were created that hopefully will last... 'til next year, young guns... Dusty Britches.
